The recall follows new research that revealed that Randitine was often contaminated by N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a chemical classified as a probable carcinogen by the FDA, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the World Health Organization. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), NDMA has been linked to various diseases, including severe liver disease, testicular cancer, liver cancer, and lung cancer.
Millions of consumers used Zantac without real knowledge of the risks. As a result, some users suffered from cancer that might be caused by the drug.
Zantac's manufacturer, Sanofi, had a responsibility to ensure that their customers wouldn't suffer injury from using their product, an obligation that they failed to see through.
In 2019, investigations into the NDMA-contaminated Ranitidine began. The FDA and Zantac sellers announced a voluntary recall of the drug after an independent lab, Valisure, found evidence of contamination. However, as evidence mounted, the FDA was forced to issue a full recall of the product in 2020. Researchers observed that NDMA contamination of Ranitidine increased the longer it sat in storage and the hotter the temperature.
